What We Do

Our global team of litigators is strongly positioned to counsel and protect clients in today's challenging environment.  Such challenging times call for experienced lawyers to guide clients through difficult problems and to bring a case to trial if necessary.

We represent clients in major commercial, regulatory and enforcement proceedings as well as in sensitive internal investigations.  We’ve been involved in many of the highest-profile cases in recent years, including Galleon, Madoff and litigation relating to mortgage-backed securities.  Our lawyers, including several former prosecutors, have extensive trial experience and regularly appear in court proceedings on a wide range of issues.  We’re just as strong in the arbitration area, handling numerous contested proceedings every year.

For example:

A jury in San Francisco acquitted Shearman & Sterling client Richard Bai of criminal price-fixing charges after a three-week trial in the Northern District of California. Our victories are particularly impressive given that a federal criminal acquittal in a white collar case is extremely rare, given the government's vast resources and its ability to choose which cases to charge.

“I cannot think of a better job than the one I have.  At any given moment, I may be on my feet in court, struggling to perfect a written submission, puzzling through the intricacies of a global investigation, or advising a client on tactics for a major transaction, a high risk investment, or in a crisis situation.  We compete at the highest levels, with colleagues who inevitably add value, for clients who understand our worth. What more could you want? ”
