What We Do

International Arbitration

Shearman & Sterling's International Arbitration lawyers have represented companies, States and State entities in hundreds of international arbitrations, primarily in investment, energy, construction, mergers and acquisitions, and general commercial disputes.  These cases were held under more than 100 governing laws and international instruments, in over 40 different venues and subject to all major international arbitration rules.

We offer clients assistance, representation and advice at all stages of the arbitration process.  We also appear before national courts to prosecute or defend applications for interim measures in support of arbitration, such as injunctions, attachments and orders preserving evidence.  Members of our team also act as arbitrators and expert witnesses.

Clients, competitors and leading professional publications have described our practice as “one of the best on the market,” whose "quality is pretty much unsurpassed,“ and “a fantastic experience for clients,” adding that our team is “sought out by clients that have a great deal to lose or whose problems other law firms have found too intimidating.”

For example:

We represented European retail giant Casino as claimant in two ICC arbitrations in São Paulo against its joint venture partner, Brazilian tycoon Abilio Diniz. The dispute concerned breaches of a shareholders’ agreement concluded between the parties relating to the control of Brazil’s largest retailer.

“As a common-law trained US litigator now working in Paris, I have found my transition to the International Arbitration team entirely seamless.  Not only have the research and writing skills I originally honed in New York proven indispensable to my work here, these same skills have grown stronger as I've applied them to new legal and factual contexts.”
