The Association of Various Asia-interested Lawyers Aligned for Non-discrimination, Community, Honor and Excellence (AVALANCHE) promotes mentorship, community outreach and cultural awareness for Asian-heritage and Asia-interested attorneys throughout the firm.
Diversity is not simply a philosophy at our firm; it informs who we are and how we do business with our clients and with each other. We strongly believe that diversity in our perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences enhances the quality of our work and augments our lives, and we are resolute in our mission to continue to weave difference into the fabric of the firm.
Our active Diversity Committee, composed of partners and associates, is charged with designing and implementing initiatives that promote awareness, provide education and foster open conversations on diversity and inclusion issues.
Our professionals form a remarkable mosaic of backgrounds, cultures, generations, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Their unique perspectives generate a firm culture that is both innovative and open. The results are tangible: better work product and a better work environment.
We support several inclusion networks created and directed by our associates. These groups meet regularly to share ideas on professional and business development and to offer guidance and support to one another as the group’s members advance within the firm. The groups also host events of interest to people within and outside the firm, showing thought leadership and building relationships with colleagues and members of the broader legal and business communities.
Bay Area Diversity Group (BAD) provides a forum for the Bay Area attorneys to implement locally-targeted diversity initiatives.
Black Lawyers Aligned in the Quest for Excellence (BLAQUE) focuses on mentoring, networking, and professional development initiatives to support the recruitment and advancement of Black attorneys.
The Latin American Professional Development Group (LAPD) is an initiative of Shearman & Sterling associates and counsel with professional and personal interests in Latin America.
Sterling Pride provides leadership and support for an inclusive and respectful environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender colleagues.
The Women’s Initiative for Success, Excellence and Retention (WISER) emphasizes mentorship, professional development, and awareness for all lawyers across offices and practice groups.
The firm's Inclusion Networks are associate-run and membership is open to all associates.
